Review of Cashback (2007) by Joseph H — 05 Nov 2010
Every once and a while a movie takes you by surprise. Sometimes it's because it's so awful that you can't believe they would put it out. Cashback is the complete opposite. I heard this movie was about a guy that had the power to stop time for everybody but himself. Having thought of that scenario countless times I picked up Cashback. I didn't expect much so I put it on before bed expecting to watch ten minutes and fall asleep. The movie hooked me in the first ten minutes. It literally combined multiple genres for different parts of the movie. It started as a breakup movie; then to art film; then to work comedy; then to teen comedy; then to suspense/horror (for a second); then to romantic comedy.
(Spoilers).
The end still astounds me. did he imagine that the megahappyending was real? OR did he really have the power to stop time? I prefer the latter but the fact the movie will let you ponder it makes it that much better.
The supplementary characters are priceless, the Natalie, the Ninjaman, the Market boys...all are throughly entertaining and worth every second.
The visuals in this film are stunning. I have watched countless films and usually the cheesy ones are the ones I like but Cashback just astounded me on the visual effects, though spaced, were amazing; especially for an independent film.
I may have to do a youtube video on this movie. You need to see it. Don't be surprised if you see an American adaptation of this one in the next few years. Check it out, stay with it, you will enjoy this film.
