Review of Case 39 (2009) by Ivar M — 13 Feb 2011
This could have been a pretty good horror movie, had they advertised it correctly in the trailer, or had it been what the trailer promised. **SPOILER ALERT**: WHAT THE TRAILER REVEALS: a social worker goes to the home of an abused little girl and rescues her from her parents who are about to kill her. She takes her in as a foster child, and we start to learn that there are demons haunting this little girl and that they're killing off those close to her. WHAT THE MOVIE ACTUALLY IS: a social worker goes to the home of an abused little girl and rescues her from her parents who are about to kill her. She takes her in as a foster child, and we realize that the little girl is the demon. In fact, the preponderance of the clips in the trailer weren't even in the film. And they weren't even deleted scenes, they were just clips that were shot specifically for the trailer to make us think it was a different movie.
So, we go into it expecting the social worker to defeat the demons and save the little girl, but we just end up with her defeating the demon. Although, I will confess that Jodelle Ferland was excellent as the all too literal demon child. And the film did have it's moments.
