Review of Casablanca (1943) by Joshua L — 07 Feb 2012
Few movies can stand up to nearly seven decades of hype like Casablanca can. If anyone actually hates this movie, I can only scratch my head and wonder why.
Bogart's Rick Blaine will go done in history as one of cinema's greatest characters. He was edgy, suave, caring underneath, and a cynical bastard all at once. His presence alone nearly overshadows everyone else in the film, despite a great cast all around.
Peter Lorre's short scenes were memorable as I have always been interested in him as an actor. Greenstreet, Bergman, Rains, and Henreid all turn in epic performances.
As I sit and write this, I am having a hard time finding any flaws in this film. It is clearly a classic that will always stand the test of time.
10 Scale Rating: 9.5.
