Review of Casa de Mi Padre (2012) by Mads D — 07 Aug 2012
The conceit of Casa de mi Padre isn't great: essentially an ascetically minded spoof of melodramatic telenovelas. I personally loved Kung-Pow: Enter the Fist, largely because of how relentlessly it pursued comedy within and beyond its gimmicky trappings.
Casa, however, seeks to have its ironic cake and eat it with the fork of affection, a tricky balancing act that it doesn't consistently pull off. Much of the humor feels toned down to suit the nature of the format, and the moments that genuinely seem like serious attempts at telenovela-esque drama end up being the most rewarding.
It's a surprisingly watchable film, granted, but not a particularly substantial one.
