Review of Casa de Mi Padre (2012) by Hector B — 21 Aug 2012
Baxter, you know I don't speak Spanish. Will Ferrell plays Armando Alverez, a humble rancher who must defend his family's honor from drug dealers. The most impressive feat about Casa de mi Padre is the fact that it even exists.
If you go in expecting a typical Will Ferrell movie, you will be nothing short of bewildered, because this is not his usual affair and is almost entirely in Spanish. My favorite Will Ferrell movies are when he does something different (Stranger Than Fiction, Everything Must Go), and I am, admittedly, a sucker for Western tropes, which are indeed featured here, but this is just a weird little movie, sometimes in a good way, and sometimes not.
The oddest thing about this movie is actually the humor; most of the jokes do this bizarre thing where they keep repeating, sometimes until it comes back around to being funny again, and other times awkwardly petering the scene out.
It's hit and miss really, but it did catch me off guard a large number of times. I am rating this as highly as I am because there is a minute and a half long scene that had me laughing non-stop hard; I can't even remember the last time a joke struck me so well.
There is nothing about this that is high in quality, and this probably won't hit with most audiences, but for what it's worth, I got my fair share of enjoyment out of it.
