Review of Casa de Mi Padre (2012) by Tom R — 21 Sep 2012
(2 Stars) Granted, Casa de mi Padre is a risky movie to make, but not all risks pay off. I'm sure most people, myself included, don't have a knowledge of what the film parodies. I don't watch much Spanish telenovellas, so I'm not sure what's supposed to be a joke and how well the source material is satirized. But I went into it it with a clean slate; after all, if the film is funny and I'm laughing, I wouldn't need to have much knowledge of what was being satirized. Someone can view Robin Hood: Men in Tights without any knowledge of any Robin Hood lore and still find it funny. However, Casa de mi Padre lacks laughs. I remember laughing in the first ten or so minutes, but then they died. Will Ferrell is usually funny, but I don't know what I'm supposed to laugh at in this movie.
Casa de mi Padre would have worked much better as a fake trailer in Grindhouse or maybe a ten minute short on Funny or Die, but the hour and twenty four minute runtime seems to drag. I wouldn't call it a terrible film and I admire it for being different, but it's not one I would want to watch again.
