Review of Cartel Land (2015) by Jaime D — 13 Mar 2016
An interesting look at the war on cartels from two different viewpoints. One in Mexico with local freedom fighters who battle them head on, and another with people in the US capturing people hopping the border.
The US story is just not that interesting. The people come off just the wrong way. They seem to do nothing but capture people who are trying to make their life better and don't seem to have anything to do with the cartels.
On the much more interesting side, you get the freedom fighters in Mexico. There are much more interesting and intriguing characters there who have an actual purpose and seem to be making a difference. By the end of the documentary though, you do get a different perspective on it which is very interesting.
This would have been much better had they just entirely cut the US part and focused more on the Mexico part. Perhaps they had a better idea when they started shooting, but it just didn't work out. I found Drug Lord a much more interesting look at the cartels.
