Review of Cars 3 (2017) by Jeremy G — 21 Feb 2018
This movie was decent until the final act, which I really didn't like. I don't think there is really anything very amazing about this movie, but if you are a fan of the cars franchise, then this will likely be a good fit for you.
I am not the biggest fan, but I felt this movie had potential to be something more than the previous 2 Cars movies, but it was more of the same. I would say the first one is better, but this is at least better than Cars 2.
Most of it was fun enough to be a watchable movie, but I felt there was a lot of missed opportunity particularly in the way it ended. SPOILER ALERT. So in the end when Lightning goes to Florida to race to prove himself that he has still got it, he begins the race.
Eventually, like halfway through race he decides his time has come to an end he lets Cruz finish the race and she wins. There are a number of problems I have with that ending. First off, that is hard to believe that Cruz would be able to do that with no experience, but I will give that a pass because it is really targeted towards kids anyway.
However, this also cheapens the victory for Cruz and McQueen. I think they should have gone more the creed route and have him recognize the talent in Cruz during the training montage before they head to Florida and he has to come to a realization his time is up and he needs to move on and he focuses on training Cruz and then she starts and finishes the race and Lightning is essentially her Doc Hudson.
This would give the character a nice closing and the story would have come full circle and would have been a more symmetric way to close the franchise. I feel this movie is full of missed opportunities, but it is decent enough, it just isn't Pixar level quality.
