Review of Cars 2 (2011) by Zachary P — 25 Feb 2013
In Cars 2, redneck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) becomes a spy. That's really all you should need to know about this movie, and it is fantastic in both concept and execution. The problem comes in, however, that the movie also wants to involve Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson), but his character arc ended in Cars. As a result, he comes across flat and peevish, and, in my opinion, resulted in the bad ratings the film has gotten.
Lightning aside, however, Cars 2 is a breathtaking movie both for its sheer scope and the magnificent stunts, and when the plot doesn't get in the way, the film is fast-paced enough that we don't care about its deficiencies. Does a spy/action movie need anything more than a modicum of plot, anyway? James Bond seems to think not.
