Review of Carrie (2013) by Alex V — 10 Feb 2014
Telekinetic Carrie White kills a bunch of people at prom. You know the story. Brian DePalma did it once already. And for those looking for a radically different take on the story, you won't find it here. This 'Carrie' is that 'Carrie,' except with cell phones. And in a story about waiting for the prom scene to hurry up and get here already, being faithful to its predecessor and source material might not have been the most interesting way to go after all. Meanwhile, you get to enjoy uneven acting, cheesy special effects, and a lot of that high school drama stuff we all love so much. Wee!
Anyway, the night of the prom massacre arrives, and by this point the movie's done a pretty fair job of making you hate everybody in the room, and here you are, ready for some good old fashion wanton bloodshed. Well, forget it. Carrie isn't just going to kill people. She's only going to kill people who deserve it. That's how angry she is! Moderately so. The whole scene seems designed to avoid disturbing the kiddies out there in the audience, and the film suffers for it. Whenever you think Carrie's about to do something awesome and brutal, she instead chooses the audience friendly option. What a cop out.
--4.0/10--.
