Review of Carousel (2013) by Jeremy B — 31 Jul 2008
This adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein's greatest musical could have benefited from expanded exterior shooting (the few scenes that were shot outdoors, especially the Soliloquy sequence, look fantastic) and a more ambitious director (King's tendency to just plant the camera during some of the musical numbers is a bit boring).
Still, Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones are even better here than they were in Oklahoma, the supporting cast is charming, the score is beyond perfect, and we even get Agnes DeMille's brilliant second act ballet in its entirety.
So what's not to love?
