Review of Carolina (2003) by Jc E — 22 Jun 2010
As far as good romantic comedies go, this one doesn't quite fit the bill. Add to the fact that this is one of those films about the dysfunctional family dynamic, then you have even more trouble. There's no denying the appeal that Julia Stiles (The Bourne Ultimatum), but she deserves better than this.
Shirley MacLaine plays the whacked-out grandma a little too well, and is actually the highlight of the movie. The annoying part comes in the form of Alessandro Nivola (The Eye). By the time the climax is reached you're so annoyed with the fact that he's even being considered as a romantic interest and not the token gay friend.
Abrupt and funny in some parts, pathetic in others; it's pretty hit or miss. With help from Jennifer Coolidge (Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans) and Randy Quaid (Vegas Vacation), it barely stays above unwatchable, but never quite achieves anything more than mediocrity.
