Review of Carol (2015) by Calvin C — 30 Dec 2015
In Todd Haynes' lavish 1950s period piece, Rooney Mara plays a young woman who falls for a married woman played by Cate Blanchett whose marriage is falling apart. Their romance becomes a secret and the two must hide their relationship in a time when it was still taboo. Cate Blanchett is her usual radiant self, but it is Mara who has the more complex role. She is a straight woman who has a boyfriend and good life, but can't understand why she has an attraction to the much older Carol. Not actually Brokeback Mountain when it comes to pushing the envelope, CAROL succeeds in the two leads and great direction from Haynes who really gets the time period. In addition, Kyle Chandler should also get recognition as Carol's husband who knows about Carol's past but still loves her.
Grade: A-.
