Review of Carol (2015) by Leah H — 16 Jan 2016
Sheer brilliance!
Why can't I stop talking about this movie? Simply said...it is a masterpiece. Tension abounds ...the opening scenes are filled with a tension that pervades throughout the entirety of the movie. Tension is at the core of this movie. Tensions between society, family and a love that "should never be". Tension also makes up the fabric of the musical score with it's the relentless repetition of notation and theme, ebbing and flowing...with a tempo not unlike that of a train "lurching" on a track.
Everything in this movie appears to be fluid engulfing and enveloping one with a myriad of emotions, juxtaposing tense scenes against seemingly banal ones. But it is this juxtaposition that gives the movie it's power, it's presence, it's passion.
Cate Blanchett's performance was beyond words.... stunning! The subtlety of the acting, the ever present nuances are the predominant features that sets this movie apart from any other I have seen, and may ever see again. This film is quite simply a masterpiece. Bravo Todd Haynes and encore.
