"Carol" is the new Todd Haynes film and although the film is a very good film, it lacks the moments that made "Far From Heaven" and "I'm Not There" great. It's basically about an older woman named Carol (Cate Blanchett) and a young, naive shopgirl Therese (Rooney Mara). Although the film portrays a tryst between these two, it shows the domestic life of both characters.

Carol is at the verge of losing her daughter due to a moral clause in a divorce settlement because of her past relationship with another woman. Her husband Harge (Kyle Chandler) suspects her infidelity and believes its immoral but he loves her and wants her in his life. He wants a normal happy family. Therese is young, her boyfriend Richard (Jake Lacy) wants to marry her and travel to Europe. Therese feels suffocated and is unsure of what she wants.

"Carol" is based off the 1950's book by Patricia Highsmith who based Therese off herself and made the character of Carol a composite of two different women she was involved with. She wrote this after the screenplay to Alfred Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train.".

This film shows warmth and tenderness between the two without having multiple sex scenes.
