Review of Carol (1990) by Mark K — 21 Mar 2018
CAROL is a great love story- the kind of film that requires careful handling on all fronts- and Todd Haynes does it very well. He is able to communicate a lot through the atmosphere in each one of these scenes- that is quite an achievement. Cate Blanchett is brilliant here, but the real star for me in this film is Rooney Mara.
The first scene we see Mara interact with Blanchett left me spellbound. I have seen few actors who are able to communicate so much by doing so little- her first bit of dialogue sold me instantly. Mara doesn't make a false step in this movie- and that is extraordinarily difficult to do in such a difficult performance that requires not much in the way of physicality- only really facial expressions. This is an astonishing performance- the mark of a truly gifted talent: it cements her as one of the finest actors of my generation, in my opinion.
