Review of Carol (1990) by Tony S — 19 Jan 2016
I had very high expectations for this film before seeing it last night in Sydney. Always a danger for me, i'm often disappointed. Not this time. It's masterful. It felt like the relationship portrayed, kind of awkward at first, circling around each other just observing, waiting.
But gradually and powerfully, I was drawn in and fell under its spell. Seduced. I always felt like I was in expert hands, the cinematography, the non linear direction of the tale and of course the exquisite use of non verbals highlighted in other reviews.
A delicate touch here, glance or smile communicates so much more powerfully than the spoken word. I notice that Carol is not nominated for an Academy Award which I find bizarre. If this isn't the finest movie of 15/16 I'd be amazed.
Really, it doesn't matter, I'm convinced this will be a film that people will come back to in 20 years time as marking a high point in quality movie making.
