Forever influential, "Carnival of Souls" is one of the best horror films I've ever seen. Despite it's low budget and "B-Movie" feel, I can't help but commend it for being so darn creepy.

The camera placement, shot placement, and musical placement are designed to perfection. "Carnival of Souls" is more than just a horror movie, it's a wonderful work of art. Reminding me of the American avant-garde movement of the era, its juxtaposed shots left me feeling confused, alone, and unsafe.

There is something "off" in every scene and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't confused the entire film. But that's part of its beauty; part of its charm. The acting is awful in some parts but brilliant in others which leads me to believe that the director, despite the "hoaky" feel, had complete control over the production.

Everything feels calculated in some way. For a cinephile looking for a thought-provoking horror film, "Carnival of Souls" will no doubt challenge its viewer, but it will also creep you out. It's a phenomenal film.
