Review of Carnal Knowledge (1971) by Corey B — 15 Jan 2010
Funny how Nichols made this long before Closer, yet they are both very close to the same movie, a movie about love and how screwed up it is for both sides of the gender pool. It seems like 'all is fair in love and war', men are all about the one uping the other guy regardless of the damage they cause (even when they are supposed to be friends) and women leading men on a path that they are not even sure where that is exactly like men unaware of the pain they cause and vice versa, they are both guilty.
Like Closer when it comes to love, the pleasure is short and sweet but the pain it causes is hard and everlasting. This film is over 30 years old and it still holds up. Mike Nichols has to be one of the interesting directors I have watched.
While Woody flirts with this subject matter and Kevin Smith tries to come close Mike Nichols is in a class to himself when it comes to these films.
