Review of Carnal Knowledge (1971) by Rakeem M — 23 Jun 2010
A very good movie about two really despicable men. It's somewhat of a spiritual prequel to "Closer", another brilliant relationship drama by Mike Nichols and can even seen as a companion to his seminal "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?".
The film tackles some pretty racy material for it's time (it was released in 1971), and it's surprisingly still relevant today. I like how the film was framed more as an examination than as an indictment of the characters, we see them as pitiful and sad, while remaining unsympathetic toward them.
Nicholson and Ann-Margret impressed me the most, their scenes together were acted beautifully, but the entire cast is excellent.
