Review of Carnal Knowledge (1971) by Caleb M — 28 Jun 2011
A hard-hitting, realistic drama about two friends and their romantic relationships over the years. Nichols is a fantastic actor's director, and he basically lets the performers have this picture, with almost zero technical flourishes.
He doesn't even cut to action of Garfunkel and Nicholson playing tennis in one brief scene, allowing the camera to stay on Ann-Margret and Cynthia O'Neal. Nicholson is devastating in this, easily one of his most engaging performances out of the '70s, and Garfunkel more than holds his own.
