An excruciating exercise in sadomasochism. David Lynch has done a much better job of exploring what lies beneath modern mores. The script is not quite as radical as it fancies itself; rather, it is tedious, redundant, and hellaciously interminable...(Sartre's "No Exit comes to mind.) The audience needs to be given more credit for understanding the dark instincts that are lurking below the surface of the human mind. Duh, we get that human beings are animals, dangerous, treacherous, and red in tooth-and-claw animals.

In addition, this piece dovetails nicely with cause celebre Roman Polanski"s intractably cynical worldview. The character played by Jodie Foster is a clumsily created caricature of those puritanical American zealots who hounded him down for drugging and raping that 13-year-old girl all those years ago. Roman gets revenge on those "go-gooder" types in this piece. And shame on Jody Foster for taking on this role.
