As ever with these kinds of prequels/sequels to classic movies, this would have been better as a stand-alone movie with a few name changes and different title. It's vastly inferior to the original, but still an entertaining enough gangster movie.
However, there's little attempt to tie in to events in the originalm with the ending in particular making no sense when you think about how Pacino's Carlito started the later movie and what his ambitions were.
