Review of Carlito's Way (1993) by Eduardo T — 02 Sep 2012
The best part about this film is the fact that it has two of the greatest of all time. Al Pacino and Sean Penn give memorable performances thanks to the genius direction by Brian DePalma. Of course this is one of my favorites.
Two of my favorite actors being directed by my favorite directer. How can this not be one of my favorites. Compare this to Scarface and it's not as good but this features some directing style that Scarface doesn't have.
I really liked the camera work used in this film. The part when Carlito Brigante (Al Pacino) throws the bullets in the trash was very well directed. It was a jaw dropping moment and from there you know what has to happen to David Kleinfeld (Sean Penn).
One of the few things I didn't like about this film was the choice in pacing. DePalma's choice in pacing is usually very slow but this one seemed a little faster then his other work. The script gave us an emotional story that is worth telling.
Right at the beginning we already know the fate of our protagonist but not the events leading up to it. I loved the shooting scenes at the end. It was intense and bloody, just the way I like it. The production values where good as well.
The set of the gentlemen's club was nicely put together. The acting was good like how I already pointed out. It's not the actors best work but still strong. If you like mobster films then you should watch this film about a gangster that didn't want to be gangster anymore.
