Review of Carlito's Way (1993) by Deb S — 10 Feb 2010
Carlito Brigante (Al Pacino) is an ex-drug dealer who has been released from prison and is legitimately attempting to go straight but he's continually being dragged back into the business. His move to a new life isn't easy, as Carlito must resist every taunt and opportunity to drift back into his old lifestyle. He meets up with his old love, Gail (Penelope Ann Miller) who is trying to help him lead a straight life.
Despite good intentions, Carlito's misguided loyalties and an outmoded code of "street honor" plunges him into a savage life-and-death battle against the relentless forces that refuse to let him go.
Sean Penn gives a great performance as his slimy lawyer/friend and is the most unsavory creep I've seen in a while. Viggo Mortessen is superb in his small role. Also props to Luis Guzman as Pachanga who melds nicely as the betrayer.
There were many action filled scenes through out the film and I especially loved the absolutely hair-raising chase sequence at Grand Central Station. Entertaining New York crime tale, it has suspense, romance, action...this is pure entertainment and another masterpiece from Brian DePalma.
