Review of Carandiru (2003) by John C — 12 Aug 2007
Carandiru is more of a soap opera set in a prison than a gritty prison drama. The film, which is set in one of the most notorious prisons in Latin America, is filled with one soapy story line after another.
The plot contains so much soapy drama that the concluding scenes that depict the grizzly prison riot of 1992 are presented without context. The film just gets nasty and violent at the end and the viewer is left wondering why.
A film that could have been a whole lot better than it ended up being.
