Review of Caramel (2007) by Ewa F — 19 Sep 2008
Heather and I watched this last night. It definitely not Hollywood, as it does a lot of character development of these women....rather than have them as superficial screen sirens. Well worth the rental fee.
A little complex in terms of the numbers of characters, but lively and quite fun, with sprinklings of pathos for those who like their reality with tears. Sensitive directing and good ensemble acting deals with a number of issues that are as valid in Beirut, as they might be in Rome, Israel, New York, or London.
No guns, explosions, or sex.... as a warning for my guy friends to keep this in mind before renting. :) A lot of the scenes seemed 'French' in the style, lighting and cinematography. The city is Beirut, which not that long ago, was a city choking on its rubble and shot up buildings.
Nice to see its rebirth and the pride and vibrancy of the people who live there.
