Review of Captivity (2007) by Alex P — 24 Nov 2012
8%, really? Okay, this film has it's flaws but it not THAT bad.
Yes, it has the cliches to every torture film; the victim keeps saying "Please let me go! I'll do what ever you want! I won't tell anyone!".
The dialogue is awful "What's real, Gary?". "What you can touch." HUH?
The sex scene is ridiculous. Yeah, after almost getting killed by the torturer 5 minutes ago, I'd be in the mood to have sex too.
The sudden twist at the end is just......... really. When it happens, you're not surprised, you just think "Okay. They're going to do that? Right.".
I never really bought the scene where Jennifer has acid poured on her face and then the next scene she wakes up and she has bandages on her face. Her face is okay but she has a prosthetic scar on her face. She peels it off, no problem. Maybe the torturer wanted to trick her, I dunno.
And also, how many times does Jennifer keep getting knocked out. Every scene she tries to escape and then she gets knocked out about 10 times. Remember that episode of The Simpsons where they spoof The Prisoner and Homer gets knocked out over and over? It's like that.
However, Elisha Cuthbert is good. I can go on forever about how gorgeous she is. I like the set of her "prison" and I like the cringe factor. The best scene is when she forced to drink blendered human body parts. I also like how in the first 30 minutes, it's just Elisha Cuthbert acting on her own. Well, unless you count the torturer. But he doesn't respond. But to carry the film on your own is hard to do.
For a stupid movie, it's underrated. It's enjoyable if you ignore the flaws. I think critics saw too many torture films like the Saw and Hostel movies and were fed up.
Also, did I mention how gorgeous Elisha Cuthbert is? I'd like to kidnap her myself.
