Review of Captain Fantastic (2016) by Joel H — 09 Jan 2018
I'm shook. I went into this film with absolutely no expectations, fully expecting some Caucasian Hipster Indie Movie bullshit. The trailer and the poster do it absolutely NO favors in that respect.
What I found instead was a brilliantly written and conceived, beautifully performed drama that really does consider all angles of the repercussions of what this man is doing to his children. And while it is far fetched that all SEVEN of them turned out to be basically superhumans as a result of their parents' training, the kids are good enough to really sell it, and it makes you question your own conception of what society's institutions should look like, or if at least it should be allowed for the will of the group to reject that and carve their own paths.
Bra-fucking-vo.
