Review of Captain Fantastic (2016) by Wayne M — 21 Oct 2017
Captain Fantastic is a joy of a film. It has some minor flaws but it has a huge heart and a strong emotional pull that overcomes those. Viggo Mortensen is truly superb as the inspiring father raising his six children off the grid in the Pacific Northwest.
Mortensen is a grounded actor who fills his roles with a strong humanity. In this case his character is a man who firmly believes that modern society is too concerned with money and power and consumption to give his children a wholesome view of life.
They live a wild and eccentric life that leaves them well rounded but also outcasts to society. When a family tragedy strikes they are forced to react with the world around them which causes family friction and a questioning of their lives.
As said this film exudes heart and a beautiful energy. It is warm and generous. It is also instructional in that there are lessons there in finding a better way of life. Sometimes the points are delivered with an obvious and heavy hand but in the end it's a refreshing film that can be enjoyed on many levels.
