Review of Captain Fantastic (2016) by Pat R — 31 Jul 2016
Captain Fantastic is a road trip, summer-fun movie. A star vehicle for Viggo Mortenson and a group of 6 awesome child actors. With guitar-strumming music sequences, it's a hippy's version of the Sound of Music in a way.
There is a shared theme of a father raising children with no mother. It's one of the best movies we have seen this year. In the beginning, the movie didn't know if it wanted to be a comedy or a drama, but ultimately it turned into a fable of sorts with a few good laughs.
In the beginning, I wasn't sure if Mortenson's character was a villian, but the plot unfolded to be one of the sorts I am appreciating more - a plot that doesn't rely on violence or sex, jut characters unraveling before us.
Screenplay and actor most likely to see nods during award season.
