Review of Captain Fantastic (2016) by Luke E — 14 Aug 2016

Captain Fantastic tells the unique and truly endearing story of a father (Played Brilliantly by Viggo Mortensen) who raised his family outside of civilization alongside his wife following their own chosen (albeit 'Atheist') philosophy, yet only when his wife suddenly passes away does he face the bigger conflicted interests of his own family as well as his in laws.

Strong performances from a hugely talented ensemble cast is the big strength this film has on offer, not to mention how brilliantly written these characters are, the kids upbringing and personal beliefs almost akin to Amish lifestyle only a little more radicalized.

While the concept to this film would offer a bigger more compelling and evolving film, it's three act structure tell a cohesive narrative full of rich subject matter and the conflict of interests between the characters is nothing more than thought provoking.

It's exotic look and adequate run time makes this film stand out from any sense of mainstream influence to truly embrace unique creative quality seen within American independent films. I'd say Captain Fantastic is one of this year's best and would highly recommend seeing it when it comes.
