Review of Captain EO (1986) by Michael H — 25 Jan 2012
I remember watching this 'Captain EO' mini-movie during a childhood visit to Disneyland back in the '90s. Our titular character and his crew are on a mission to deliver a special gift to some wicked, Borg-like queen inhabiting a dark, desolate world. And at movie's ending scenes, EO starts dancing to the "We Are Here To Change The World" track. While it was too short to be a theatrical feature, I definitely like Captain EO; it's very sci-fi, very 'Star Wars' in style. Already fresh in his Thriller era, a still-black Michael Jackson does his fine EO acting performance. These alien puppet characters look cool. Plus, this was a 3D showing - the audience gets to wear 3D glasses and see the good special effects (SFX) fly out! I still remember this MJ feature as magical and entertaining, a relic of the bygone '80s era of moon-walking dances.
'Captain EO' was directed by Francis Ford Coppola, produced by George Lucas, and released in 1986. For movie fans who are as old as I am (the 20+ years), I'm sure you'll remember this Disney attraction back to your childhood years. Oh, and as a tribute to the late King of Pop, the film made a return to the Disney theme parks in 2010 after a 12-year absence due to another attraction.
