Review of Captain EO (1986) by Adrian Z — 21 Sep 2012
Here's one that has to be "experience" at Disneyland, although it does seem to be all over youtube. George Lucas teamed up with Francis Ford Coppola and MIchael Jackson to produce a 3D short that would be shown as an attraction.
The film must be seen in conjunction with the lighting, spray, and hydraulic movement effects. It all works well, and it makes Captain Eo a very immersive attraction. It also boasts some excellent 3D cinematography and techniques, getting away with objects that truly float in front of the screen.
The film itself is unfortunately less memorable than Michael Jackson's Thriller, simply because it features some mildly irritating Muppet like aliens and the music ("We Are Here To Change The World") although nice, is less striking.
However, nothing in the choreography can be faulted. It's exhilarating to watch MJ in action, and I couldn't help but feel that the world has lost an amazing performer. The special effects and production design (which throws together elements from Star Wars, The Wizard of Oz, and Alien, are top notch).
I was also impressed with Anjelica Huston's freakish portrayal of "The Supreme Leader".
