Review of Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001) by Esther S — 08 Jun 2007
A visually breathtaking piece, 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' does suffer from the lack of chemistry between gorgeous stars Nicholas Cage and Penélope Cruz, yet somehow rises above such a vital imperfection.
The pair deliver strong, likable performances, with Christian Bale and John Hurt offering solid support, though Cruz appears out of place with her thick Spanish accent. In all, the film is beautifully photographed and scored, telling a tender tale set against the backdrop of inevitable violence.
