Review of Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) by Brendan N — 22 Apr 2018
Old fashioned and well made. the marvel series is basically one connecting series at the moment and it treats its audience and characters with respect. Johnson was the obvious choice for this film, Rocketeer and October Sky are old fashioned American movies which are right down his alley.
The Marvel tone was established after Iron Man 2 and this film is the bridge for the Avengers setup. The film isn't a grand defining action film but it is fun and pulpy, if Captain America wasn't Marvel, he would be in the leagues of The Shadow and The Phantom.
There is a great cast on offer and the setups for the sequels are all here if you look for them e.g. Bucky. I was happy the film was a success and introduced a character who fights for the little guy.
Fans away from the comics or Marvel series might struggle to find something here but I always tell people, it leads to Winter Soldier and Avengers, can't argue with that. 22-04-2018.
