Review of Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) by Dave H — 23 Apr 2014
Extremely square, yet refreshing so. Just as earnest and almost as much fun as JJ's previous attempt as superhero cinema: The Rocketeer. Great origin-tale set-up, refreshingly dated location and sensibility, unbelievably working in the cheesy Amercianess on the character and suit in a satisfying way.
Droll Jones and cheeky Tucci are the cast highlights, but Evans does well with an exceedingly nice, exceedingly dull character, especially in the first act when his head is grafted onto a stick-figure body.
As Avengers set-up movies go, I'll say the Capn' lies below Ironman, above Ironman 2, and about on par with Thor. JJ's also been a poor-man's SS, if not in richness of technique then certainly in sensibility and tone.
He's never bettered Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, but I dig his work.
