Review of Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) by Phillip D — 03 Aug 2014
Captain America's premise is certainly better than Thor and for that, I rank it slightly higher. However, the whole movie loses clarity once Hydra really gets going. The plot is, at that point, preposterous and Hugo Weaving takes a step (or a stiff drop) down from his usually stellar roles and plays a poorly written and designed villain that is truly cringe worthy.
The name Red Skull says pretty much everything you need to know about this villain. The rest of the movie is a miracle of coincidence and suspension of disbelief that ranks among the best (or worst). The First Avenger is a necessary installment to The Avengers world but I would rather it didn't exist.
