Review of Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) by David B — 07 Apr 2014
Chris Evans is unprecedentedly touching and engaging for a superhero - and the rest of the cast help this adventure seem something close to character-driven instead of just being a bundle of stunts. This is one of the first superhero's ever to be created and Captain America was used as propergander during the second World War but this seems to have updated the fact and made into a proper fantasy fictional film.
The cast are great, as mentioned and Chris Evan is perfect as Captain America, starting off as a weedy but a heart of gold soldier only wanting to serve his country and gets his chance. Hugo Weaving is great as Red Skull and makes the perfect lead bad guy, the rest of the cast are just as good.
The special effects did sometimes feel a little weak and lazy but luckily this film doesn't rely on special effects or stunts to make it good but a lot of emotional heart and good acting, along with a good plot and perfect direction.
It doesn't try too hard for irony or style; the comic-book sensibility remains pure, square, and happily stupid. But once again it feels like the Americans save the day again...and I'm getting fed up with it, aside from that and lame effects, it's a great super hero movie and better than most.
Spot on.
