Review of Captain America (1990) by William H — 20 May 2012
Thank GOD for the new Captain America film, it was just what was needed to replace this clunker! But wait wait... this early 90's adaptation of Captain America isn't all as terrible as it's claimed to be.
First of all, this was filmed on an extremely low budget, and with that in mind director Albert Pyun did almost as much as one could with that in terms of locations and special effects, and the result is not so bad.
The action isn't half bad either, pretty entertaining sometimes even with the choppy editing! However, many other problems plague the film. Matt Salinger isn't a bad actor but he's a little miscast as being "America's hero" and Scott Paulin just isn't all that good as the Red Skull, he'd be better off being one of them Italiano villains in those mobster films.
Captain America needed better backstory, better facts to show he's the hero of America that everyone knows and counts on, better more believable actors, bigger action... and needed a bigger budget! Hence we were blessed with the 2011 adaptation.
Still, being sort of a low-budget film aficionado myself, I've seen films look worse on budget than Captain America, and I mean farrrr worse!
