Review of Capitalism: A Love Story (2009) by Phillip R — 30 Oct 2010
It might have been useful to actually define Capitalism as a starting point for this poorly conceived moan at big business and the evils of free enterprise. Much like Moore himself this film is bloated and dull but it does have some moments.
Finding out that Walmart took out life insurance policies on people in their name but without their knowledge and made a ton of money when they died! However, this suffers from the same thing that rots all of Moore's documentaries (hey isn't a good documentary supposed to show both sides of an argument?.
.. oh well) to the core and that's his insistence on showing reels and reels of women crying, as if it has some kind of intrinsic factual relevance. It's a cheap trick and it's actually quite amusing in itself.
I'd wager you could make a good drinking game out of taking shots whenever a woman is shown weeping in one of Moore's films. Probably make the whole thing more depressing though.
