Review of Cape Fear (1991) by Sally A — 14 May 2009
Not as good as the original, but still great. It has a superbly acted ensemble performance, with Robert De Niro's performance being my favorite performance. He was actually better at playing Max Cady than Robert Mitchum in the original film.
It's a commonality for De Niro to give brilliant performances, but this is one of his finest performances ever. His southern "redneck" accent is perfect, that is only one disturbing technical element of his performance.
He does such an outstanding job of making that character menacingly clever in such a convincing way that he is immediately disturbing right from his character's first scene. Thanks to De Niro's masterful control of his acting craft, you can sense Cady's disturbing aura immediately.
Some cast members from the original film (Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck being two) play minor parts in this film.
