Review of Cape Fear (1991) by Alexander Z — 16 Apr 2011
Seriously bad. Overacted, over the top, hammy, terrible acting by Jessica Lange, subplots dropped, total lack of knowledge of the law displayed, idiotic fight scenes, retarded sexual undertones...it just goes on and on.
The only good things about this were Juliette Lewis and Joe Don Baker. Even De Niro wasn't that good. Even if you can tolerate it for the first hour, it all begins to fall apart by the second, culminating in one of the dumbest climaxes I've ever seen, along with an obligatory voiceover epilogue.
And what's with all the whirling camera work and flashes of red or black and white? You can't help but laugh at how cheesy this ends up being when the intention was so obviously intended to go for suspense and horror.
Loud noises that turn out to be nothing? Check. The psycho killer who keeps coming back after a plethora of things that should have killed him? Check. An incredibly stupid suburban family? Check. No wonder The Simpsons parodied this in a Sideshow Bob episode.
I couldn't think of a better horror movie to choose.
