I think the major problem is that Scorsese and his screenwriter Strick needlessly complicate a story that was perfectly fine to begin with. The added overblown religious imagery and marital problems just end up padding the film and making it too long.

I do like the performances and enough of the scenes to give it a pass. Really, it comes down to how well the sequence in the school theater between De Niro and Lewis is executed . . . just unsettling in all the right ways.
