Review of Can't Hardly Wait (1998) by Corey M — 27 Sep 2008
After watching the presidential debate I felt crazy depressed, so I intended on deepening that feeling by watching this; no absolute reason behind watching it. What can I say, I liked it; by no means is it original or good, but fun and endearing.
Green is actually funny as a character thinking he is black, he literally sells that part. And the writing is occasionally sharp, stringing together some references, such as with referencing Barry Manilow that show there was actual thought put into the script.
We know where the film is heading but it occasionally confounds expectations by playing it straight, infusing reality where there often is none. Alright, I'll stop as it sounds like I'm overpraising the movie.
Hewitt sucks hardcore in this, can barely deliver a believable line. Though Embry anchors that plot, his initial, very first reaction to her first noticing him rings so true it hurts. I simply can not hate this movie, it has nearly every "teen" actor of the late nineties, EVERY "teen" actor.
Hell, there was even forward thinking in having Jason Segel for a scene. One last thing, the trailer is hilarious for the mere fact that it has two Third Eye Blind songs in it. All together, a weaker version of John Hughes that actually fits the 90's.
