It's got heart to it, but it gets a bit lost in its middle act with its overriding schemes of popularity. The ending has a nice payoff though. A fair example of the heroic journey... for an 80's nerd.
.. who's rise and fall in popularity teaches him money can't buy popularity, only your own personality can fairly get you what you desire.
