Review of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by Jason J — 16 May 2010
A group of documentary makers which intended to film a tribe of cannibals disappear in the Amazon rainforest so a rescue team which includes a professor head deep into the jungle to find out what happened to them. They discover 2 tribes of cannibals residing there, the remains of the team and the footage they shot before contact was lost with them. When the footage is reviewed back in New York, they discover savagery too unspeakable for words!
The ultimate video nasty? Banned in many countries and featuring 7 graphic scenes of animal cruelty, Cannibal Holocaust has a grisly reputation that's known all over the world. What's made this movie so infamous is the horrible execution of live animals such as a muskrat, a monkey and a turtle which is very gory, gruesome and distressing to watch. But that's not all - there are other nasty scenes in this movie which just have to be seen to be believed. Modern horror audiences will know doubt wonder what the fuss is all about as there are far more gorier movies that's been released during the past decade but back in the early 80's this caused such a commotion and finished off the career of the director.
As a horror movie, this isn't too bad at all and is quite rightly a cult classic. It's certainly controversial but worth watching. The haunting soundtrack is very good. Cannibal Holocaust is quite simply essential viewing for fans of extreme cinema as long as you have a strong stomach that is. You have been warned!
