Review of Cannibal Holocaust (1980) by Chris A — 14 Dec 2010
Having watched the uncut version only, I cannot really comment on whether the elements cut add to the film in its entirety. Part of my psyche wasn't as affected by the animal cruelty as expected...I think my brain decided that it was fake.
Anyway, it's definitely a hard hitting film, and the messages conveyed are quite poignant. However, the end message (voiceover) asking who the 'real' cannibals were was incredibly cheesy and unnecessary.
Oddly enough this did not effect me as much as A Serbian Film, probably because it was less pornographic.
It works in the same way as many other horror movies work - create incredibly annoying unlikeable characters, then kill them off. It's fascinating though that cannibals are existing in this world still, and tribes with similar behaviour are all too real.
The musical score in this film is fantastic, but the plot is a little confusing at times and drags on a little. Some very interesting points are made throughout, particularly Dr Monroe (I think) using the term 'raping of the senses'.
