Review of Cannibal Ferox (1981) by Markus L — 20 Mar 2008
Perhaps its a bit of a cliche to compare Cannibal Ferox to Cannibal Holocaust, but its a good starting point in discussing where Cannibal Ferox goes totally wrong. Cannibal Holocaust is by no means a masterpiece - its an ugly slice of exploitation cinema that manages to be neither art NOR entertainment - but it is fully committed to its nastiness, and takes the exploitation formula to its extreme.
Ferox on the other hand, feels like Diet Coke in comparison; it tastes similar, but something is missing. Ferox never goes as far as Holocaust when it comes to all-out gore and ugliness, and while Holocaust very gracelessly tried to put forth a social message, the conclusions made towards the same thesis here came across as forced and hyperbolic.
If you are going to see just one cannibal movie, this is not the one.
