It seems as though Jordan Peele and company saw the recent Halloween and thought we can do the same with Candyman. Acknowledging the original (ignoring the lesser sequels), with callbacks and characters from the original, while creating a continuation of the mythology.
And even though the release was delayed by covid, it seems rushed. Very stylishly shot and well acted and directed, it would actually IMO benefit from a little longer running time. Good, when it could have been great.
